About
With encouragement from high school running coach and Emerging Elites Assistant Coach, Bryan Dunn, Kofi started running in the summer before his junior year. From the start, Kofi was eager to push himself and compete at a very high level.
Kofi finished his high school career at Roxbury Latin as one of the most accomplished runners in the Independent School League (ISL) and in the history of New England Prep. He claimed a NEPSTA D2 Championship title in cross country, along with 2 individual ISL titles and 4 individual NEPSTA titles in track. Kofi was named 2022 NEPSTA Track MVP and 2023 ISL Track MVP, earned “All Scholastic” selection by the Boston Globe and Herald, and was named a Globe Foundation/Phelps Scholar Athlete in 2023. |
Cross Country 2021
With a strong training block under his belt, Kofi finished 10th at the ISL Cross Country Championships and 3rd at the subsequent New England Preparatory Division 2 Cross Country Championships. |
Indoor 2022
Kofi affirmed his commitment to running by training with the Emerging Elites winter program during his junior year. Eager to improve his track PRs and learn how to race indoors, Kofi focused on learning how to train well. He showed flashes of potential as he lowered his mile PR from 4:50 to 4:25 indoors at the Boston University Terrier Classic. A few weeks later, he broke 2 minutes in the 800m at the BU Valentine Invitational, running 1:59. |
Outdoor 2022
Kofi had a breakout junior outdoor season. He ran the tables week after week in the ISL, often doubling and tripling each meet. Kofi kicked off his competitive “championship” season at the ISL Championships, where he finished 2nd in the 1500m and 3000m. A week later, he produced an outstanding performance at the New England Preparatory Division 2 Championships. There, Kofi captured the 1500m and 3000m titles, and he finished 2nd in the 800m with a PR of 1:57.14, a time which broke the pervious school record. Kofi’s performance earned him New England Preparatory MVP Honors. Looking to qualify for the championship section of nationals, he raced the 1500m at Battle Road Track Club’s 3rd Twilight Meet, blazing to a PR and qualifying time of 3:57.13. Kofi traveled to Philadelphia, PA and raced at the historic Franklin Field for New Balance Nationals Outdoors. There, he lowered his mile PR to 4:15.77. Kofi decided to challenge himself by racing the Tommy Cochary High School Mile in August before his senior cross country season. He finished in 3rd place with a time of 4:22.6, just behind teammate Brian Gamble. |
Cross Country 2022
Heading into his senior year, Kofi wanted to test himself over terrain. Managing a hamstring injury in the early fall, Kofi once again ran the tables in the ISL regular season, setting two course recordss. He set the St. Sebastian School’s home course record in 15:47 and the following week set Roxbury Latin School’s home course record in 16:45. He ran a solid 16:08 at the Franklin Park 5K and headed into the championship season with momentum. He finished 2nd at the ISL XC Championships and captured the Division 2 New England Prep XC title at St. Mark’s to cap off his scholastic season. |
Indoor 2023
Heading into the indoor season, Kofi wanted to build his fitness and establish himself as one of the best runners in the country. He opened his indoor season at the BU Terrier Classic in January, running 8:26.79 in the 3000m for the 5th fastest 3000m in the U.S at the time and 2nd fastest time in the state behind teammate Brian Gamble. Two weeks later, he ran 4:16 in the mile at BU’s Valentine Invitational Meet. These two times qualified Kofi for the championship sections of the 2 mile and mile at New Balance Nationals Indoors. At New Balance Nationals Indoor, Kofi set a new lifetime personal best in the 2 mile, controlling the race from the halfway point and finishing in 9:11.86. He followed this performance with a slight personal best in the mile, running 4:15.34. |
Outdoor 2023
Kofi started his senior outdoor season strong, going undefeated in the ISL competition for a second time. Kofi was invited to run at the first-ever BSR Elite Scholastic Mile in May. There, he ran a smart race and was rewarded with a new mile PR of 4:13.64. Many thanks to Marathon Sports, Hoka, and Bay State Running for organizing this meet. The following week, he ran at the ISL championship meet, capturing the 1500m and 3000m titles, and finishing 2nd in the 800m. This performance earned him the honor of ISL MVP. He went on to win the New England Preparatory Division 2 1500m and 3000m championships, and finished 3rd in the 800m. Building upon this momentum, Kofi debuted in the 5K at Battle Road Track Club’s 3rd Twilight Meet. There, he ran 14:49 on the track to qualify for the championship section of the 5K at New Balance Nationals. Kofi then ran the Open Mile/Combined Scholastic Mile at Adrian Martinez, which combined the top scholastic milers with the top open athletes. Kofi ran 4:18 to finish in 5th place. He culminated his high school career at New Balance Nationals, where he turned in one of the best races of his career in the 5K. He hung on to a fast pack of runners and finished 7th in the country with a time of 14:56. His performance left him one position and 2 seconds away from earning an all-American spot. |
